About Marqués de Riscal
Marqués de Riscal is one of Spain’s historic wine names. The estate was founded in 1858 in Elciego, in Rioja Alavesa, and adopted a more technical, Bordeaux-influenced approach to winemaking at an early stage. Careful grape selection, ageing in oak and an emphasis on longevity were central to that approach. It helped establish Rioja’s reputation beyond Spain. The original winery at Elciego remains the historical centre of the estate.
In Rioja, Marqués de Riscal works principally with tempranillo, supported by the region’s traditional complementary grapes, mazuelo and graciano. Elciego lies in the relatively cool Rioja Alavesa, where elevation, calcareous-clay soils and Atlantic influence can bring freshness and structure. For its Rioja range, the house draws on fruit from suitable vineyards across the appellation, with origin and selection varying by wine. Oak and subsequent bottle ageing remain important parts of its recognisable style.
Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva express the house’s traditional side: ripe red fruit, spice, cedar, savoury leathery development and softened tannins. Arienzo Rioja Crianza is generally more youthful and immediate, combining juicy fruit with an approachable oak note. Próximo and Riscal Tempranillo focus more on early-drinking appeal. Barón de Chirel, Viña Collada, 150 Aniversario and Frank Gehry Selection are more selective Rioja releases, generally offering greater concentration, complexity and capacity to develop.
Marqués de Riscal also has an important place in Rueda. From the 1970s onward, it contributed to the modern revival of verdejo and also produced sauvignon blanc there. Dry Verdejo commonly combines citrus, fennel, green-herb notes and a gentle bitter finish, while Sauvignon Blanc is often more overtly aromatic. The Frank Gehry-designed buildings of the Ciudad del Vino in Elciego have made the estate a notable destination, but its enduring reputation rests on clearly defined, widely recognisable Spanish wine styles.
