About Josmeyer
Josmeyer is a family estate in Wintzenheim, immediately west of Colmar in the heart of Alsace. Its reputation rests on wines that express site and grape variety clearly rather than a conspicuous cellar signature. The Josmeyer name is closely linked to the Meyer family, which has cultivated vineyards in and around Wintzenheim for generations. Today, the estate is regarded as a thoughtful exponent of traditional, terroir-led Alsace.
The vineyards sit where the Vosges foothills meet the Rhine plain. Alsace is comparatively dry because the Vosges shelter it from much of the rain arriving from the west; within that broad setting, altitude, aspect and soil vary markedly from one lieu-dit to another. Josmeyer farms organically and biodynamically. Its key sites include the Brand and Hengst grands crus. Brand, above Turckheim, is largely granitic and commonly brings finesse and energy. Hengst, near Wintzenheim, is a warm, powerful slope with limestone and marl soils, lending structure and depth.
Riesling is central to the range, from Le Kottabe, Les Pierrets and Le Dragon to Riesling Grand Cru Hengst. The wines are generally dry, or at most gently rounded, with bright acidity, citrus, white peach, herbal notes and a marked mineral line. Pinot Gris from Brand and Hengst has a broader texture and may show smoke, spice and ripe fruit. Gewürztraminer, notably Les Folastries and Grand Cru Hengst, offers floral perfume, rose, spice and exotic fruit, ideally held in balance by freshness.
The quieter Alsace varieties are equally important here. Mise du Printemps Le Pinot Blanc, H Vieilles Vignes Pinot Auxerrois and Le Fromenteau Pinot Gris favour suppleness, savour and food-friendly balance. Fleur de Lotus shows that the estate also makes more immediately approachable white blends alongside its site-specific bottlings. The best grand cru wines have the concentration and acidity to develop over several years, although their precision and purity are often especially appealing when young.
