About J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines
J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines is a family-owned California producer founded by Jerry Lohr in 1974. Headquartered in San Jose, the company operates wineries in San Jose, Paso Robles and Greenfield. Steve Lohr has been chief executive officer since 2013. By volume, J. Lohr is among the larger wine producers in the United States, yet its identity rests substantially on estate vineyards and on working across several distinct Californian growing regions.
The company owns more than 4,000 acres of vineyards in three principal areas: Paso Robles in San Luis Obispo County; Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County; and St. Helena in Napa Valley. Warm, dry Paso Robles, with its pronounced day-to-night temperature shifts, is particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Monterey County receives strong cooling influence from the Pacific. Arroyo Seco and the elevated Santa Lucia Highlands are consequently important sources for Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir with freshness and aromatic detail.
J. Lohr’s wines are distinctly Californian in fruit profile, generally combining ripe flavors and an approachable texture with enough balance to retain varietal and regional character. The Estates range is the widely available foundation of the portfolio. Riverstone Chardonnay is a familiar Monterey Chardonnay expression, while Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon represents the Paso Robles side of the house. Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir, Los Osos Merlot, South Ridge Syrah, Tower Road Petite Sirah and Wildflower Valdiguié illustrate the producer’s broad stylistic reach.
Above the Estates wines sit the Vineyard Series, Cuvée Series, Gesture, Signature and Pure Paso labels. Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best-known Paso Robles bottlings, while Pure Paso is a red proprietary blend with a clear Paso Robles character. Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena and Arroyo Vista Chardonnay also show the firm’s focus on named vineyard sources. The wider portfolio includes ARIEL, a separate non-alcoholic wine brand, as well as Cypress Vineyards and Painter Bridge.
