About Gérard Bertrand

Gérard Bertrand is among the best-known producers in Languedoc-Roussillon. The house is named after Gérard Bertrand, who first had a rugby career with RC Narbonne, Stade Français and the French national team. Following the death of his father, he took over the family estate and devoted himself to wine. From its base near Narbonne, the business developed into a producer working with vineyards and partners across several southern French appellations.

Its foundation is Mediterranean Languedoc, a vast and varied region between mountains and sea. Sunshine, wind and generally dry summers help grapes ripen, while altitude, limestone, schist, clay and maritime influence create markedly different terroirs. The producer works in areas including Corbières, La Clape, Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Pic-Saint-Loup, Tautavel and around Limoux. Cooling winds and cooler nights, especially in elevated or more northerly sites, are important in retaining freshness.

Red blends are central to the range. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan generally yield Mediterranean reds marked by dark and red fruit, herbs, garrigue and, at times, earthy or stony notes. Wines from La Clape and Corbières can be generous and savoury, while Pic-Saint-Loup often brings more lift and spice. Gérard Bertrand also makes approachable Pays d’Oc and IGP wines, including varietal Syrah and Grenache-Syrah blends.

Rosé is another important category, notably Gris Blanc and Côte des Roses. Gris Blanc is a very pale, dry rosé with a light, refreshing profile; Côte des Roses is generally fruity and floral. Domaine de Cigalus is one of the house’s better-known upper-tier cuvées and includes both red and white blends. This broad offer, from everyday regional wines to terroir-focused appellation bottlings, explains Gérard Bertrand’s prominent place in contemporary Languedoc.
