About Aldi
Aldi is not a conventional wine estate with its own vineyards; it is an international food retailer sourcing wines from a range of producers, cooperatives and bottlers. Its selection changes by country, season and tender, so an Aldi label primarily needs to be read through its appellation, grape variety and named producer or bottler. Rather than one fixed house style, the 57 wines in this database point to a broad, approachable European range.
Germany is particularly prominent, with wines from Baden, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Nahe and Mittelrhein. Baden, including the Kaiserstuhl and the area around Nimburg, is among Germany’s warmer wine regions and is well suited to ripe Pinot varieties: Spätburgunder and Weissburgunder feature strongly here. Edition Fritz Keller identifies a separately named producer on certain bottles; such collaborations should always be assessed bottle by bottle. Rheinhessen supplies examples of Dornfelder and Müller-Thurgau, while Riesling feinherb is a classic German style, combining lively acidity with a modest degree of residual sweetness.
The range also extends to Italy, Portugal, France, Spain and Austria. Puglia can produce generous, sun-shaped reds, while Fiano is a southern Italian white variety often associated with ripe citrus, floral and herbal notes. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a red-wine appellation, and Bardolino Chiaretto is usually a pale, light-bodied rosé based on grapes grown around Lake Garda, notably Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. Lisboa is an Atlantic-influenced Portuguese region where red blends may combine Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and local grapes. Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages indicate Rhône blends, commonly based on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, whether or not all appear in the database.
In style, the selection centres on recognisable regional types: dry Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, fruity German reds, off-dry whites and rosés, Mediterranean red blends and accessible Rhône wines. German terms such as trocken, halbtrocken, lieblich and feinherb are useful guides to sweetness and balance. Cellaring potential depends on the individual wine. Most bottles in this kind of range are intended for early drinking, though a concentrated Rhône-Villages or a more serious Spätburgunder may develop over several years. The vintage, appellation and named bottler or producer remain the best guides on any individual bottle.
