About 19 Crimes
19 Crimes is an Australian wine brand launched in 2012 by Treasury Wine Estates. Its name refers to the nineteen offences for which British convicts could be transported to Australia in the 18th and 19th centuries. That colonial history provides the brand’s distinctive framework: its labels feature portraits of real convicts, accompanied by their names and stories.
The geographic indications are deliberately broad. Many Australian wines are labelled South Eastern Australia, a large zone that can draw fruit from more than one state, and Victoria also appears within the range. 19 Crimes also produces Californian wines for the US market. It is therefore not a traditional estate centred on one contiguous vineyard, but a brand using selected fruit from wide production areas.
Its style is approachable, ripe and clearly fruit-led. The reds are generally full, smooth and dark-fruited, with notes that may suggest blackberry, plum, spice, vanilla and toast. Shiraz is a central variety, often joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache and Durif or Petite Sirah. Hard Chard is based on Chardonnay, while Sauvignon Block represents the fresher, aromatic side of Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir also has its own expression in The Punishment.
Key bottlings include Red Wine Blend, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, The Banished Dark Red and Shiraz-Durif. The Uprising Red is notable for finishing in rum barrels, which can add sweet spice and oak character. The Californian line includes Snoop Cali Red, created in collaboration with Snoop Dogg. The Warden Reserve and Life Sentence Red sit at the more powerful, richer end of the red-wine range. 19 Crimes is best known for story-led packaging, augmented-reality labels through Living Wine Labels, and an immediate, uncomplicated drinking style.
