Southern Rhône

The Southern Rhône Valley stretches from Montélimar to Avignon in southeastern France, marked by its warm Mediterranean climate. This region enjoys abundant sunshine, dry conditions thanks to the mistral wind, and low rainfall. The soils are varied, ranging from the famous large pebbles (galets roulés) around Châteauneuf-du-Pape, to sand, clay, limestone, and alluvial terraces across the broader area.

Grenache is the dominant grape here, typically blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Carignan. For whites, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Viognier, and Bourboulenc are key varieties. The wine region is home to several well-known appellations, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape being the flagship, but also including significant villages such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Lirac.

The wine styles are rich and robust, with most reds being blends showing ripe red fruit, herbaceous notes, and spice. Many evoke the region's garrigue with their aromatic herbal character. Whites tend to be aromatic, fresh, and layered, while rosés are vibrant with red fruit and floral notes.

Most wines are produced under the Côtes du Rhône or Côtes du Rhône Villages labels. The best bottles are age-worthy, developing complexity with cellaring.
