South Australia stands as the powerhouse of Australian wine, responsible for more than half of the country's total production. The region encompasses a remarkable diversity of geography and climate, from cool maritime edges to warm, dry inland areas. This range allows for the cultivation of both aromatic and refreshing white wines as well as rich, robust reds.

Key subregions include the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, and Eden Valley. Barossa Valley is internationally recognized for its full-bodied, spicy Shiraz, while Clare Valley is widely praised for crisp, mineral-driven Rieslings. Cooler areas such as the Adelaide Hills excel in elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Coonawarra's distinct terra rossa soils produce structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.

Soil types vary from limestone and sandstone to clay and the distinctive terra rossa. The regulations for Australian GIs (Geographical Indications) are less stringent than in Europe, giving winemakers notable flexibility in grape selection and blending, even across different regions.

Wines from South Australia are known for their ripe, expressive fruit and approachable styles. Many reds from Barossa and McLaren Vale offer impressive aging potential. Well-known villages and vineyards include Nuriootpa and Tanunda in Barossa and Watervale in Clare Valley.
