Sancerre is a renowned wine region and appellation located in the eastern part of France's Loire Valley, southeast of Orléans. The landscape features rolling hills and a temperate continental climate, with cool winters and warm, sunny summers. This climate encourages slow grape ripening, preserving vibrant acidity and aromatic precision in the wines.

The soils of Sancerre are notably varied, with three major types: chalky limestone (caillottes), flint (silex), and clay-limestone (terres blanches). Each soil imparts distinctive qualities: flint brings a marked minerality, limestone ensures freshness and delicacy, and clay-limestone contributes structure and weight.

Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant grape variety and is responsible for Sancerre’s internationally celebrated dry white wines. These whites are crisp, aromatic, and lively, with flavors of citrus, green apple, gooseberry, and often a stony minerality. Pinot Noir, the only permitted red grape, produces fresh, light reds and delicate rosés. AOC rules are strict: only Sauvignon Blanc for white and Pinot Noir for red and rosé are allowed.

Sancerre wines are valued for their brilliant acidity, clarity, and expression of terroir. They pair wonderfully with local goat cheese (especially Crottin de Chavignol), seafood, shellfish, and delicate fish dishes. While most Sancerre is enjoyed young, the best examples can age gracefully for several years.

Notable villages include Chavignol, Bué, and Verdigny. There is no formal classification system, but vineyard names and producers often indicate wine quality.
