Marlborough is New Zealand's most renowned wine region, situated at the northeastern tip of the South Island. The area benefits from a cool, sunny, and dry climate, protected by mountain ranges and influenced by the sea, fostering slow grape ripening and intense aromatics.
Soils in Marlborough are mostly gravelly and alluvial, with excellent drainage, often mixed with loam and sand. These conditions are ideal for growing aromatic varieties, producing wines with vibrant acidity and purity of fruit.
Sauvignon Blanc is Marlborough’s flagship grape and has brought global fame to the area. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also prominent, alongside smaller plantings of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and others. The appellation rules are relatively flexible: wines labeled ‘Marlborough’ can source grapes from across the wider region.
Marlborough is celebrated for its crisp, intensely aromatic whites, especially Sauvignon Blanc, which often displays notes of passion fruit, gooseberry, lime, and sometimes green pepper. Pinot Noir from the region is bright and fruit-driven, with soft tannins. While Marlborough wines are generally enjoyed young, some Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs can age for a few years.
