Côte de Beaune

The Côte de Beaune is the southern portion of Burgundy’s Côte d'Or, stretching south from just below Nuits-Saint-Georges and the town of Beaune down to the Dheune river, covering roughly 25 kilometers. Its geology is notably diverse, with a predominance of limestone intermingled with marl and clay. This varied terrain creates marked differences in the style and expression of wines across villages and individual vineyard plots.

The climate is distinctly continental, with warm summers and cool winters. Vineyards are typically east-facing, benefiting from early morning sun and some protection from western winds. This orientation encourages even ripening of the grapes, imparting balance and complexity to the region’s wines.

Pinot Noir is the principal red grape, producing elegant yet nuanced red wines with aromas of red fruits, florals, and hints of earth. Chardonnay dominates the whites, yielding world-renowned wines, especially from villages such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet. These white wines are often rich, precise, and mineral-laden. Some Aligoté is grown for fresh, everyday whites.

The appellation structure is intricate, with a mosaic of vineyard classifications ranging from regional Bourgogne to Premier Cru and Grand Cru. Notable villages include Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet. The reds are generally lighter and more perfumed than those of the Côte de Nuits, while the whites are considered among the world's finest. Many of the best wines have significant aging potential.
